A member of the Spaniel family, the Field Spaniel is noted for being slightly larger than a Cocker Spaniel. The Field Spaniel was originally bred as a show dog, as it was not very adept in the field. However, in the 1950’s the Field Spaniel was redeveloped with longer legs, making it far more suitable for fieldwork. They are noted for their lengthy ear and lustrous coat, which can be black or liver-colored, or a combination of the two colors. The Field Spaniel stands between 17 – 18 inches tall, making for a well-proportioned dog with a graceful gait.

Known for its long coat of hair which is parted down the middle, the Lhasa Apso is a non-sporting breed that finds its origins in Tibet. It was originally used in Buddhist Monasteries as a guard dog to warn monks of intruders, however, it has since become a prominent player in the world of show dogs. The Apso is a playful and alert breed, but it does have a mischievous side, so it does require some monitoring.

Originating in the 16th century in Belgium, the Schipperke is a small-sized breed that is believed to be of the Spitz type, although some argue that it is more closely related to the miniature sheepdog. The Schipperke’s small stature and keen instincts make it well-suited for hunting rats and other small rodents. Its soft coat of silky hair is lengthier around its neck and tapers slowly towards the rear. The coat of the Schipperke comes in black, chocolate, and apricot, as well as mixed patterns like black and tan.

The extremely large Scottish Deerhound is a breed of hound that finds its origins in Scotland. Standing nearly 32 inches at the shoulder, with a slender build similar to a greyhound, the Scottish Deerhound was once used to hunt red deer. Its scraggly coat is most often a mix of dark blue and grey, however, it does come in other shades, such as fawn and yellow. This gentle giant gets along well with other dogs, as well as humans.
